Aurora, Colorado

NCC was consulted to provide the technical expertise required for Cherry Creek schools to successfully complete a residential DeConstruct™ project in Aurora in the spring of 2010. The project gained much attention in the Denver area and gave the project partners the impetus to quickly locate a new project. Over the summer some new partners joined, and within a few months 1695 Alton Street was designated as the fall project for fourteen Cherry Creek school students. The 2,500 square foot 1958 house had been in disrepair for several years.

Fifteen students were interviewed and selected from two programs: Business Education Transitions (BETA), and the School to Work Alliance Program (SWAP). Funding for the student stipends came directly from Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Workforce Center.

Nine students graduated from the program, of which three were hired in full-time construction jobs directly after graduation.

Highlights:

  • Nine DeConstruct™ Technician Certificates issued
  • Over 1,200 of volunteer hours
  • Three students hired immediately after graduation
  • Project completed in 23 days
  • Nearly three tons of wood salvaged for reuse
  • ¾ tons of metal recycled

Partners:

  • ADworks!
  • Cherry Creek Schools
  • Merchant Enterprises
  • W. Struble & Associates

Steele’s Market

Steele's Market DeConstruction Volunteer, Fort Collins, CO

Background: Steele’s Market had been a community fixture in Fort Collins since the 1950s, but in February of 2001 the family run grocery store closed its doors. The building was never occupied again, and in 2009 the new owner, Bohemian Companies, took the bold step to remove the community landmark. The National Center for Craftsmanship (NCC) was consulted to bring its technical expertise to the deconstruction project.

Strategies and Results:

  • Deconstruction of 22,000 square feet, including two commercial buildings.
  • Full interior removal to salvage lumber (timber and dimensional), cabinets, doors, plumbing, electrical and mechanical.
  • All of the recycling (wood, steel and copper) and waste accounted for using LEED® protocols; monitored and documented by NCC LEED AP staff.
  • 90% of construction waste diverted from the landfill; over 1,200 tons recycled.
  • Registered U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) – Future LEED Gold project.

Additionally, through a State Justice Assistance Grant awarded to Larimer County Community Corrections Women’s Program, NCC was able to train five women in deconstruction technologies and facilitate their transition back into the general population. The program is known internally as DreamBuilders. Five students were certified in eight weeks, resulting in a 100% job placement rate upon completion of the project.

Jackson Street / Rusniak Residence
Fort Collins, Colorado

In June of 2009, Archer Homes was hired to build a new home at 400 Jackson Street. The owners contacted NCC to discuss how to effectively deconstruct the old house within their construction schedule. NCC’s solution was to partner with the general contractor who would agree to follow NCC’s education, reuse and recycling protocols. Home State Bank assisted in making the process seamless for the owners by including the deconstruction costs in the construction loan.

Using mechanized equipment and skilled house framers, the entire house was recycled in just over a week.

Sustainable and environmental practices moved to the top of the City of Fort Collins’ priority list in 2009 and NCC was contracted to deconstruct a farmstead from the 1890’s and two other structures on north Overland Trail. The project garnered much attention, prompting the Discovery Channel to film our technical and training procedures for their “Renovation Nation” show hosted by Steve Thomas.

The goal of the project was to restore the site into a natural area with paths and walkways.

Highlights:

  • 240 students from Pioneer Charter school, Poudre School District and Colorado State University all participated in safely deconstructing three structures.
  • Over 300 cubic yards of wood and 3½ tons of materials recycled

This is where it all started for NCC. Thanks to the owner, Les Kaplan – who had confidence in NCC’s skilled volunteer staff and the merits of DeConstruct™ – 4708 Lady Moon Drive in Fort Collins was successfully deconstructed. Students from Poudre and Thompson School Districts, Front Range Community College as well as volunteers from Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity all learned invaluable techniques including Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) protocols.

Other partners in the project were the City of Fort Collins and Larimer County.
