Robb Sommerfeld, Assistant Director of NCC, and technology teacher at Berthoud High School led his students to earn two championship trophies at the 2012 Vex Robotics World. Berthoud Robotics Club with sponsor/mentor Robb Sommerfeld has come back with 2 World Championship trophies! Two teams out of the four that competed have won Vex Robotics World Championship titles. Team Palladium members Nicolette Power, Caleb Hammel, Jon Schlagel and Brian Montereo won the prestigious “Build Award” for best built robot in their division. Team Critical Mass members Kaleb Stenis, James and Katie Wood, Zak and Mitch Sandel, and Veronica Mizor won the highest award given. They won the “Excellence Award” in their division. This award is only given to the “best of the best” and a team from Berthoud has brought one home!
All four teams competed well and found the level of competition to be absolutely world class. There are 4800 teams in the world and close to 400 made it to compete at the Vex Robotics World Championship. The students found themselves working with other teams from various countries, and had to be able to communicate with them in order to come up with strategies before they alliance together in competition matches. With over 20 countries from around the world represented, the students learned “global” communication skills.
A huge thanks needs to go to the clubs main coach/mentor Brad Von Seggern! He has given years of volunteer time to help make this all happen. The club also thanks Steve Wood and Ken Mathis for all of their volunteer time as coaches/mentors. The parents and sponsors for this club have given the students experiences that will last a lifetime. The club hopes to continue the success and is always looking for more sponsors that want to contribute to the education and academic experiences of the wonderful student in the Berthoud Robotics Club.
