DeConstruct™ Project

Alton Street DeConstruction, Aurora, CO

NCC was consulted to provide the technical expertise required for Cherry Creek schools to successfully complete a residential DeConstruct™ project in Aurora in the spring of 2010. The project gained much attention in the Denver area and gave the project partners the impetus to quickly locate a new project. Over the summer some new partners joined, and within a few months 1695 Alton Street was designated as the fall project for fourteen Cherry Creek school students. The 2,500 square foot 1958 house had been in disrepair for several years.

Fifteen students were interviewed and selected from two programs: Business Education Transitions (BETA), and the School to Work Alliance Program (SWAP). Funding for the student stipends came directly from Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Workforce Center.

Nine students graduated from the program, of which three were hired in full-time construction jobs directly after graduation.

Highlights:

  • Nine DeConstruct™ Technician Certificates issued
  • Over 1,200 of volunteer hours
  • Three students hired immediately after graduation
  • Project completed in 23 days
  • Nearly three tons of wood salvaged for reuse
  • ¾ tons of metal recycled

Partners:

  • ADworks!
  • Cherry Creek Schools
  • Merchant Enterprises
  • W. Struble & Associates
